Boat Overturns in Nigeria, Killing Thirteen

(MENAFN) Authorities in Nigeria's central Niger State have recovered at least 13 bodies following the capsizing of a wooden boat, while dozens more passengers are still unaccounted for, according to local emergency officials on Sunday.

Abdullahi Baba Arah, the head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, informed media that the vessel, heavily overloaded, was transporting mostly traders and agricultural goods from the Gunu community to the weekly market in Kwata-Zumba, located in the Shiroro area, when it overturned on Saturday.

Arah confirmed that three individuals, including the boat operator, have been pulled from the water alive, but the total number of passengers remains uncertain as the boat did not carry a passenger manifest.

Search and rescue operations continue with the support of local divers and volunteers working tirelessly to locate survivors and recover more bodies.

Boat incidents frequently occur in Nigeria, often linked to excessive loading, inadequate safety measures, and challenging weather conditions.
